ICE Raids Get Some Heat

Across the country, as U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents terrorize communities, states, cities, and lawmakers are fighting back — especially in the Golden State, where masked ICE raids have wrought havoc in Los Angeles, and sparked protests in the streets.

Los Angeles and seven nearby cities joined a federal class-action lawsuit earlier this month against the Trump administration, alleging that the federal government is discriminating against people based on their identity while conducting sweeping, disruptive immigration raids across the county — and illegally denying people counsel once detained. A coalition of 18 states filed a brief in support of the lawsuit, asking a judge to halt the raids before they are conducted elsewhere. On July 11, a federal judge granted two temporary restraining orders prohibiting the federal government from continuing its ICE raids, which it deemed unlawful — though the Trump administration quickly appealed.
